Agp 8x Grafikkarte In 4x Slot
Hi there everyone
I've got a Compaq Presario 6000 computer (Athlon XP 2100+, 512MB DDR, 80GB HD...) and I've decided to replace its now less-than-appropriate video card (a Geforce2 MX 200, 64MB VRAM) with a different one.
However, I know that my motherboard has an AGP 4x slot while most graphics cards these days run on AGP 8x. Pretty soon I found out that the cards are backwards compatible but I'm seeing mixed results posted by people using this configuration. Therefore I thought before buying anything that I'd post here and ask, would it be alright for me to put an AGP 8x card (Geforce FX 5700, Radeon 9600 or Geforce 6200) into an AGP 4x slot? Would it cause any major problems or performance degradation?
Also as a side note which of the cards listed above would be best for me (with a 128MB VRAM configuration)?. I know for a fact that's all I need because I'm not a hardcore gamer, just a casual one with a few strategy and simulation games which run a bit sluggish on my current card.
All help is appreciated.

AGP or Accelerated Graphics Port was the most popular and common interface for connecting graphics cards on motherboards. It was a high-bandwidth channel and remains on the motherboards for quite a long time. Another interface was PCI but it was a slower channel and not many graphics cards were made for PCI slot in the past.
Hi, What happened next! Did Forsa GeForce FX5500 worked in 4x AGP slot? I am planning to buy the same card now for my old PC with the following hardware: Mercury PI845GLM-AGP V1.0 400MHz Front Side Bus motherboard with 'Ultra AGP' slot Intel Celeron D 2.4GHz 478-pin processor 2GB of DDR SDRAM 160GB HDD 450W power supply Let me know this card is compatible to the 'AGP Ultra' slot. Old 4x cards are frequently higher voltage whereas the newer 8x ones are lower voltage. Hence pop goes the 8x card. If you are lucky the AGP socket cutouts will prevent you doing this. It is not as bad or clear cut as this, there are x8 AGP cards that will run in x4 slots, eg ATI Radeon 9600, maybe they can adjust the higher voltage to suit??? Can I Put An 8x AGP Card In My 4x AGP Slot? I Think The Power Voltage Is The Same. Joined Jun 19, 2004 Messages 7,800. Sep 15, 2005 #2. Will an 8x AGP video card work in a 4x AGP slot I just upgraded the video card in another computer with a new 8x 256 MB, the one I took out is an ATI Radeon 9800 pro 8x, Can I put this into my Dell Dimension 8100 that currently has a 64MB 4x i it right now. Like I said in the other thread 8X AGP uses 0.8v signaling and 4X AGP uses 1.5v. While the 0.7v difference may not seem like a lot it actually is quite a bit. 8X cards may work in 4X slots but if not initially damaged from the overvoltage they would prob degrade much faster than would be normal.
Generally, AGP came in two variants, first was the AGP 4x which has lower bandwidth and the second one was the AGP 8x which has double the bandwidth of AGP 4x. AGP 4x has a maximum transfer rate of 1066Mb/s whereas AGP 8x has 2133 MB/s. There were also AGP 1x and AGP 2x interfaces but they were very slow and not used that frequently. AGP slot is smaller in size than the PCI and other graphics card interfaces. You won’t see AGP slot in the current generation motherboards because today PCI Express x16 is used for connecting graphics cards which has much higher bandwidth compared to the older AGP graphics card interface.
In older motherboards, you may be able to find AGP slot and if you wish to upgrade the graphics of your older PC then you will need an AGP Graphics Card for it. AGP graphics cards are nearly extinct in production but you can still find some good AGP Graphics Card in the market or online for your older PC or server. To help you out on this, here I am providing you the list of best available AGP graphics cards that you can buy online.
